As Jordan marks its Silver Jubilee, the University of Jordan (UJ), the oldest and most prestigious university in the country, reflects on a remarkable 25-year journey toward global recognition. Over this period, UJ has embarked on a transformative path that has significantly elevated its status in global rankings, showcasing its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and research.
In a testament to its progress, UJ has secured its highest-ever position in the QS World University Rankings 2025, placing 368th globally. This achievement represents a significant milestone for both the institution and Jordan, marking a sharp rise from its previous rankings—498th in 2024, 591-600 in 2023, and 601-650 in the years 2019 to 2022. This dramatic climb underscores the university’s rapid development and its determination to enhance its global standing.
UJ’s achievements extend beyond overall rankings, with notable strides in specific scientific fields. In the 2025 QS rankings, UJ reached 347th globally in arts and humanities, a significant leap from its earlier placement in the 451-500 range in 2023. Also, UJ has improved its rankings in several fields: engineering and technology rose to 253rd from 260th in 2023, life sciences and medicine now rank 401-450, up from 451-500, and it achieved a 501-550 ranking in natural sciences, a field where it was unranked in 2023.
UJ achieved notable global rankings in four majors. It advanced to the 51-100 range in nursing, up from 101-150 in the 2023 rankings. It maintained its 101-150 position in pharmacy and pharmacology, and improved its ranking in medicine to 251-300, up from 351-400 last year. In life sciences, the university moved up to 501-550, an improvement from its previous 601-650 ranking in 2023.
Within the Arab world, UJ is a leader in several disciplines, holding the top spot in nursing, English, and linguistics, and ranking second in tourism. It also ranks fourth in medicine, pharmacy, and library and information science, and fifth in computer science, information systems, mathematics, and business and management. These rankings highlight UJ’s rising status as a premier institution both regionally and globally.
Further cementing its global reputation, UJ was included in the prestigious 2022 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a significant recognition for the Kingdom’s oldest university. UJ is now ranked among the world’s top 800 universities and is one of the top 19 institutions in the Arab world. This recognition underscores UJ’s growing influence and prestige, further establishing it as a leading academic institution on the global stage.
Over the past 25 years, UJ has also made significant investments in upgrading its infrastructure. This period has seen the construction of new, state-of-the-art facilities, the introduction of advanced technologies, and the modernization of existing buildings. UJ has embraced digital transformation, introducing e-learning platforms and digital resources that have modernized education delivery and enhanced the overall student experience.
Since its establishment in 1962, UJ has demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement and excellence. The university’s efforts over the past 25 years have been recognized in its steady rise in global rankings, solidifying its status as an elite institution in the academic world. As UJ looks to the future, it remains poised to continue its upward trajectory, contributing to both Jordan’s and the world’s educational landscapes.
